Authentic Punjabi cuisine in London

The “Raunka Punjab Diyan” in Southall, England, is a restaurant dedicated to authentic Punjabi cuisine and culture, presenting itself as a piece of Punjab in the heart of London. It is located in the multicultural district of Southall, often referred to as “Little India,” and has earned a reputation as one of the best places for traditional Punjabi food. The restaurant is housed in a building that has been meticulously designed to replicate the atmosphere of a rural Punjabi village. The interior features hand-painted murals depicting scenes from Punjabi village life, as well as traditional artifacts and decorations that give guests the feeling of embarking on a journey to their homeland. The staff wears traditional Punjabi clothing, further enhancing the authentic character of the establishment, while the background music featuring Bhangra sounds creates a vibrant, inviting atmosphere.

Best restaurants for Punjabi food

Culinarily, “Raunka Punjab Diyan” places great importance on preparing dishes that reflect the flavors of Punjab. A standout highlight is the “Makki di Roti with Sarson da Saag,” a traditional dish of cornmeal flatbread paired with spicy mustard leaf curry, served with a generous dollop of butter and celebrated for its rustic simplicity and intense flavor. Equally popular is the “Dal Makhani,” a creamy lentil dal rich with butter and spices, slow-cooked to develop its full depth of flavor. For meat lovers, the “Butter Chicken” offers a perfect balance of tender chicken and a velvety tomato-butter sauce that is often described as unforgettable. The “Amritsari Kulcha,” a stuffed flatbread from the tandoor, is also frequently highlighted, especially when paired with spicy chole. The portions are generous, and the use of fresh ingredients is evident, emphasizing the authentic taste.

Traditional Punjabi restaurant in Southall

The restaurant takes pride in not serving alcohol, allowing guests to bring their own drinks, which offers a relaxed and cost-effective option for groups. In addition to the main dishes, there is a selection of beverages such as the classic “Frothy Lassi,” a refreshing yogurt drink that pairs perfectly with the spicy dishes. For a light bite or as a snack, the “Pakoras” – fried vegetables in chickpea flour batter – are a popular choice, often praised for their crispiness. There are also plenty of vegetarian options, making the restaurant a place that caters to various preferences.

Culinary experiences in Little India

Service is frequently described as warm and friendly, with the staff – often exclusively female – striving to convey a sense of Punjabi hospitality to the guests. One unique aspect is the policy of not serving all-male groups of more than four, which fosters a calm and family-friendly atmosphere. However, during busy times, there may be wait times, and some guests have noted minor inconsistencies in the consistency of dishes, though this does not overshadow the predominantly positive feedback. For special occasions, the restaurant can accommodate private celebrations, and the spacious layout makes it ideal for larger groups.

Is it not possible to update your opening times on Google and on the website. We travelled for three hours on public transport today, paid £22, only to find that the restaurant was closed, even though it was shown as open today. Came back to our hotel at 11 pm without any food... Thanks for ruining our evening!!!

I have been ordering from Raunka since 2 years and no words can describe how flavourful their food is. Each and every bite takes me back to the dhaabas of Delhi & reminds me of home! Their dal makhani, paneer tikka masala, butter chicken, malai kofta, Biryani, chaat paapdi and tikki are all simply fabulous! The staff is amazing and always very warm & welcoming. Raunka Punjabiyaan Da is my Number 1 choice in Southall for Dilli ka khaana!

Grew up in India and have been craving Punjabi food since my love to London- this is one of the most delicious, wholesome places I’ve eaten at. Ate the saag and butter chicken, OMG ABSOLUTELY outstanding and recommend it to anyone craving Punjabi food and missing the taste of home.

It has great food and very friendly staff. There is music and a homely atmosphere. They brought out a cake for my granddad's 60th and a personalised happy birthday song came on for him. I would highly recommend this place and the food makes it definitely worth the visit, especially with the good price points.
